The Toyota Free State Cheetahs were established in 1895 and made their first Currie Cup final in 1973. However, the Toyota Free State Cheetahs’ faithful had to wait three years before the union lifted their first ever Currie Cup trophy in 1976. It was an impressive victory as the side defeated the mighty DHL Western Province team 33-16 in the final in Bloemfontein. The Toyota Free State Cheetahs have been runners-up on nine occasions and the last time they claimed the title was in 2016 with a 36-16 win over the Vodacom Blue Bulls.
Vodacom Blue Bulls
Vodacom Blue Bulls, previously known a Northern Transvaal, have enjoyed not only success at Currie Cup level, but also boast a rich Super Rugby history. The Pretoria union have won the Currie Cup on 23 occasions and have been runners-up on 9 occasions. The Vodacom Blue Bulls claimed their first ever Currie Cup title in 1946 by beating DHL Western Province 11-9 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
