DHL Western Province
DHL Western Province, established in 1883, is the most successful Currie Cup side. The Cape Town based side have won the trophy on 34 occasions - including four shared. DHL Western Province were the winners of the trophy in the inaugural Currie Cup tournament in 1892 although Griqualand were the first to hold the cup aloft in 1891. DHL Western Province have dominated the tournament throughout the 1890s and 1900s.
Toyota Free State Cheetahs
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs were established in 1895 and made their first Currie Cup final in 1973. However, the Toyota Free State Cheetahs’ faithful had to wait three years before the union lifted their first ever Currie Cup trophy in 1976. It was an impressive victory as the side defeated the mighty DHL Western Province team 33-16 in the final in Bloemfontein. The Toyota Free State Cheetahs have been runners-up on nine occasions and the last time they claimed the title was in 2016 with a 36-16 win over the Vodacom Blue Bulls.
